Modeling authority data: FRAD

The paper describes the conceptual model for authority data – Functional Requirements for Authority Data: A Conceptual Model – FRAD, the model corresponding to the one for bibliographic data published in the study Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records – FRBR (1998). The model was worked out by the Working Group on Functional Requirements And Numbering of Authority Records (FRANAR) established in 1999 under the auspices of IFLA Division of Bibliographic Control and UBCIM. The Group’ s first goal was to design the model that would be based on the same entity relationship model as FRBR, and on the entities, attributes and relationships defined by it. The Group’ s second term of reference is also mentioned, and it was to study the feasibility of an ISADN (International Standard Authority Data Number). The answer to that task was a separate document which was published under the title A Review of the Feasibility of an International Standard Authority Data Number (ISADN) (Tillett, 2008) and approved by the Standing Committee of the IFLA Cataloguing Section. The recommendations outline directions which could be taken at this time of technological development and state of the art in national and international endeavours in the field of name authority control. The paper describes the new Statement of International Cataloguing Principles adopted during a series of international consultations and discussions within the IFLA Meetings of Experts on an International Cataloguing Code (from2003 to 2007). The statement is founded on the two corresponding conceptual models FRBR and FRAD. Analysis of the implementation of the FRAD model in the principles will be given.
