Statues of Roman Emperors in Pula, Croatia

Three marble statues of Roman emperors were discovered in Pula. The statue of Emperor Augustus was found in the large Roman theatre Porticus Iuliae, situated on the hill Monte Zaro. The fragment of a statue with a kneeling slave was discovered in the so-called Emperor's Cult building on the north-west side of the Forum. The third statue (two pieces of a torso probably depicting Emperor Claudius) was discovered among the spolia in the Late Antique wall of a chamber dedicated to the Cult of Claudius at the north side of the Forum. In the same place the head of a statue portraying Aggripina the Younger, Emperor Claudius' spouse, was also found. Further evidence of emperor's statues in Pula is contained in the epigraphic monuments discovered at the Forum and in the wider city area. Roman Pula reached the peak of its development in the period from Augustus' to Hadrian's rule (1st to 2nd c.), which is corroborated by numerous architectural monuments. The attributions of the three Roman emperor statues are a contribution to the body of knowledge about the imperial status of Roman Pula.
