Diagnostic performance of tear function tests in keratoconjunctivitis sicca and Sjogrens syndrome patients.

A diagnostic test gives the clinician an indication of whether a patient has a certain disease ; the lack of good quality research in the field contributes to inappropiate utilization and significant wasting of resources. Data from present study suggest to implement the items of objective ocular test and minor salivary glands biopsy in the majority of Sjogren syndrom diagnostic criteria. In particular, our results confirm the scarce reliability of Schirmer test I and II, and discuss the role of vital dye staining as the test of choice in the Sjogren syndrom differential diagnosis.
