Optimal replacement of aircraft jet engine modules

A mathematical model for optimising preventive maintenance of aircraft jet engine was developed by dynamic programming method. The model regards replacement planning for aircrat jet engine modules as a multistage desicison process, optimum module replacement is considered as a problem of equipment replacement, and the goal of the optimal replacement policy of jet engine modules is a defined series of decisions resulting in minimum maintenance costs. CFM56 jet engine data were used for testing the model. Costs of optimum maintenance strategies were compared to simpler experience-based maintenance strategy costs, and the results show that further development and usage of the model could help in significantly reducing maintenance costs of airline carriers.
