Book review : Occlusion – Principles & Treatment

Book "Occlusion - principles and treatment" presents basic theories of occlusion, encountered very often in everyday dental practice, by gradually introducing the reader into the issue of evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of occlusal problems. Despite frequently present notion in modern literature about possible influence of occlusion on masticatory system dysfunction, their relationship still remains unclear. Literature on the subject of occlusion is extensive, varied and confusing, giving rise to a great deal of controversy. In this easily understandable book, the author postulates that biological equilibrium of the masticatory system must be a fundamental concern of all restorative procedures. Every single element of the masticatory apparatus has a role in the occlusal process. Moreover, synchronism among the masticatory system elements during action is critical ; what occurs on one side of the mouth must be compensated on the other side. The first three chapters: maxillomandibular relations and movement, use of articulators, and differential diagnosis of maxillofacial pain - serve as foundation for the following chapters, which address clinical aspects of occlusal treatment: diagnosis and treatment protocol, fabrication of bite splints, treatment of temporomandibular disorders, the creation of functional restorations, occlusal adjustment, and treatment of malocclusion. Thanks to exceptional illustrations and the text depicting them, this book should help in solving many dilemmas regarding anatomy of temporomandibular joints and masticatory muscles, mandibular movements mechanisms and usage of articulators in everyday practice. It should be required reading for all clinicians, not only for many useful data about physiology and pathology of masticatory system, but also for a fact that pertaining knowledge and skills may help them understand effects of applied treatment on patient’ s occlusion.
