Henry Matisse and Croatian Painting in the inter-war period
The art of Henri Matiss became an important referential point of Croatian painting only in the second half of the 20th century, critically marking the process of post-war modernist reconstruction. The reception of his art in the previous period is rather weak and could not be detected before the end of 1930's. The reasons conditioning relative indifference of Croatian modern artists to fauvism should be sought within cultural, historical and psycho-social matrix defining the process of modernization in Croatian society at the beginning of the 20th century. In that respect particular attention should be played to a rather unstable relation between Mediterranean and Central European components of Croatian cultural identity, as well as to its complex, historical and sometimes traumatic connections with German culture.
