A Covert Liason: Kovačić and Sitte
The text examines the influences and reverberations of Camillo Sitte’ s urban theory as presented in his seminal book Der Städtebau nach seinen künstlerischen Grundsätzen of 1889 on urban and architectural philosophy and principles of city planning of the major turn-of the-century Croatian architect, Viktor Kovačić. The proximity as well as specificities of two urban approaches are analyzed and discussed on two central Kovačić’ s works: the competition project for the Zagreb Cathedral Complex and the broader Kaptol area of 1908-11, and his Church of St. Blaise in downtown Zagreb of 1908-13.
