Development of Passive Conductometric Sensors for Organic Vapours Based on Conductive Thin Polymer Film

The development of conductometric sensors for organic vapours based on organic semiconductive thin polymer films is presented. This work is part of a research project and to implement passive wireless data transmissttion from sensors to a PC using the ISO standard Radio Frequency Identification, or RFID protocol. Ethanol and Poly(3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) or PEDOT-PSS were used as a model system for organic vapours analyses and conductive thin polymer film, respectively [1]. The experimental setup as shown in Fig.1 was developed. PEDOT-PSS films spin-coated on planar substrates with gold electrode structures (4 point - P, 4 track - T, Quad - Q, Dual - D, Fig.2), were used as conductometric sensors. Resistance was measured using a digital multimeter connected to a portable PC. In order to observe the initial response of sensors to ethanol (EtOH) vapours conditioning experiments were carried out. To investigate the sensors response profile and its linearity, calibration experiments were undertaken. To demonstrate the potential of the sensor for use in real samples, volume fractions of EtOH were measured in various alcoholic beverages. The influence of water was examined, too. These preliminary results indicate that the described sensor has a great potential for commercial use. Further work is in progress.
