Analytic epidemiology of multiple sclerosis in Gorski kotar - Croatia
MS-patients (Poser's criteria) who were born or have had the onset of MS in Gorski kotar, Croatia, were the subjects of an epidemiologic analytic survey (nested case-control study). The survey showed MS to be more frequent prevalent in the third born (p=0,046), those having had a higher social level, family or personal, and in females born before 1946 and with a history of tonsillitis at 7-15 years of age (p=0,011). Males who slept mead or longer and rose later were more frequent MS patient (p=0,007). So were females who spent a longer time inwards (p=0,035). Stress was a frequent characteristic among MS patients of both sexes (p=0,036) as well as a past history of retrobulbar optic neuritis. A higher association was found beetwen MS and trauma to head, neck or spine (p=0,016) which linearly correlated with the severity of trauma (p=0,003). Owners of cats (p=0,038), goats (p=0,025) and birds (p=0,023) were more frequently affected by MS. No association was found with other diseases or disorders. This research confirm a significant influence of the environment on the pathogenesis of MS.
