Distribution of Rana arvalis in Croatia with remarks on habitats and phaenology
At the border of the area of Rana arvalis in NW Croatia 47 records (29 UTM squares) are known from three isolated alluvial lowland areas (94 – 160 m a.s.l.): Pokuplje (Pannonian part of Kupa valley), Srednja Posavina (Middle Sava river lowland part), and Podravina (Drava lowland). Spawning sites are in natural depressions with stagnant waters, in depressions with alder-ash forests, and in pools and artificial standing water sites in flood-plains of hardwood alluvial forests (common oak with greenweed), which are mostly also foraging habitats in summer. The breeding season mostly starts in the first two decades of March, after the breeding of the agile frog (R. dalmatina), but usually coinciding with the common toad (Bufo bufo) and the grass frog (R. temporaria). Newly metamorphosed frog lets emerge in May/June. Other amphibians sharing moor frog breeding sites are R. lessonae/esculenta/ridibunda, Hyla arborea, Bombina variegata hybrids with B. bombina , Triturus alpestris, T. vulgaris, , T. carnifex and dobrogicus with their hybrids, and Salamandra salamandra.
