The Role of DMOs in Tourist Protection: Case of Croatia Coastal Destinations
Tourists are more exposed and more sensitive to risks than other consumers. The specificity of these risks arises from the specific characteristics of tourism. The objectives of tourist protection in tourism are: health, safety and economic interests of tourists as well as their rights to remedies, information, education and rights to organizes themselves in order to safeguard their interests. Quality of service takes a special place in this. Due to this, there appears to be a need to have organized protection at a destination, and this is the area of protection in which DMOs should be actively included. The essential functions of local tourist boards are: organization, development, promotion, information and education. By successfully carrying out those functions, local tourist boards can significantly contribute to tourist protection at a destination. The objective of this paper is to draw attention to the risks tourists in Croatian coastal destinations are exposed to, to explore the role of local tourist boards in tourist protection at a destination and to propose activities that can be used by tourist boards to contribute to increasing the level of tourist protection at a destination.
