The importance of delivering more information to consumers about fresh fruit consumption

We all know that consumption of fresh fruit is very important for consumer health. However, consumer perception of “ minimally processed” , “ lightly processed” , “ partially processed” , “ fresh-processed” , “ pre-prepared” , “ fresh-cut” , “ chilled and fresh-cut” , “ fresh-cut pre-packed and chilled” , “ ready-to-eat” , “ ready-to-use” , “ functional food” , “ healthy food” , “ health-promoting food” , “ convenient” , “ added value product” could be confusing, without knowing that all these terms could be used, to some extent, for only one food product (item) such as fresh fruit, cleaned, washed, trimmed and/or cored, sliced, and/or sometimes dipped (immersed) into some solution, either to prevent colour deterioration, the most often (enzymatic) browning, or to make the added value product, such as in honey, and in solutions with antioxidative activity, etc., and in the end, often, packed in modified atmosphere. The scientists should tackle this issue to lessen the terminology confusion and make it clear to consumers that variety of terminology does not refer to different product quality. Even though, the demand growth has led to an increased marketing of fresh products, especially in some developed countries, scientists, together with industry, should dedicate more effort to increase fruit consumption starting from the kindergarten age.
