Direct time domain analysis of a lightning rod based on the antenna theory
In this work a novel time domain model of the lightning rod based on the scattering theory is proposed. The geometry of interest represents a lightning rod mounted vertically on a perfectly conducting (PEC) ground. According to the image theory lightning rod is modelled as a thin wire antenna excited with the current source at the both wire ends. The formulation is based on the corresponding homogeneous time domain Pocklington integro-differential equation for thin wire in free space. The Pocklington equation is numerically treated by the time domain Galerkin-Bubnov scheme of the Indirect Boundary Element Method (GB-IBEM) and marching on in time procedure. The linear charge density along the rod is readily computed from the continuity equation. Validity of the proposed model is tested using antenna theory approach in frequency domain and inverse Fourier transform.
