Niobium effect on microstructure and properties of as cast Ti-Cr biomedical alloys
Among the metallic biomaterials, titanium and its alloys are the most suitable for implants. Due to their a very good properties, such as light weight, excellent biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, they are the most attractive biomedical material today. Some other properties of titanium can be improved by alloying with elements such as chromium, niobium, cobalt. This paper shows a study of as cast Ti-Cr-Nb alloys with titanium content 60-80 at.% and 10-30 at.% of niobium, a balance is a chromium. The goal of this investigation was to obtain a new β -titanium alloys suitable for biomedical applications. For that purpose six Ti-Cr-Nb alloys were prepared from pure elements in a laboratory by an arc melting method. As cast samples were metallographically prepared for microstructural observation. Optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) show that all alloys have two-phases dendritic microstructure. For quantitative metallography optical micrographs were taken with digital camera and analyzed with the program Image Tool. Hardness measurements were carried out by Vickers method. A one of the criterions for biomedical applications of material is elastic modulus close to that of human bone. In this investigation E-modul was determined by compressive test. From the results obtained by microstructural examination, hardness measurements and E-modul determination can be seen that some as cast Ti-Cr-Nb alloys have potential use in a biomedicine.
