Corrosion of lanthanum doped, sol-gel derived, mullite ceramics in nitric acid
Samples of monophasic mullite (3Al2O3• 2SiO2) ; undoped and doped with 7.10 mass% of La2O3, were prepared by a sol-gel process. Prepared gels were dried, grinded, pressed into pellets and sintered at temperatures 1100 and 1600 °C for 4 h. Influence of La2O3 content on phase formation and corrosion behavior has been investigated. Mullite thermal evolution was analyzed by Differential Thermal and Thermogravimetric Analysis (DTA/TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The corrosion behavior of the sintered ceramics bodies was explored in HNO3 solution by measuring the amount of eluted ions. Samples with lanthanum were found to be more susceptible to dissolution in corodent. The amount of eluted La3+ ions confirms the existence of glassy phase which can easier dissolute in corodent, as well as predominant incorporation of La2O3 in the glassy phase during the sample synthesis.
