CREATING ADDED VALUE FOR RURAL AREAS: THE CASE OF WINE TOURISM IN CROATIA

The world of wine and wineries is undergoing major changes globally as well as at the local level. One of these is pertaining to the tourism industry where many wine regions as well as individual wineries are attempting to develop as tourism attractions. On the demand side, there is a move away from standardized mass travel towards travel with an aim to pursue specific interest and hobbies. The wine as well as enjoyment related to wine production and consumption is prominent owning to the general shift towards the lifestyle consumption where fine food and wine are an essential ingredient. On the supply side destinations, to gain competitive edge, are looking at the ways to diversify their products. Those destinations that are endowed with traditions of wine and wine production are embarking on developing wine tourism primarily via wine roads and winery visits. Finally, many winemakers, especially in the smaller or newly emerging wine regions, are facing stiff competition and high cost associated with establishment of distribution channels. Selling wine directly to consumers in their wineries is not only cost effective, but helps them in establishing reputation and generating additional revenues from selling variety of complementary products and experiences. Therefore, the wine industry is recognized for its potential for tourism and, in particular, rural tourism development.
