Experience in estimation of road traffic noise situation in urban zone

The recommendations of European Directive on environmental noise have mostly been accepted in the Republic of Croatia and have been included in the existing regulations. It has been stipulated that quiet and peaceful regions should be treated with special care, and the state of environmental noise should not deteriorate as a result of new spatial interventions. The only precise method to estimate environmental noise is field measurement. This is a lasting and expensive procedure, but it is also inapplicable as far as the influence of the future intervention on the state of noise is concerned. In the process of planning and making decisions regarding the construction of new road infrastructure, in Croatia the application of German RLS 90 method has been determined for the estimate of the change in environmental noise situation. As every other method it includes some simplifications and it does not provide clear directions on application in all situations that can appear in practice. It primarily refers to the estimate of environmental noise situation in urban areas. The paper illustrates some experiences in the application of RLS 90 method for the estimate of environmental noise in the city of Zagreb, a big industrial, economic, educational and cultural centre. For the purpose of this illustration two zones have been chosen situated near intersections. These zones present well the situation in other parts of town, i.e. in zones situated near roads which are “ similar” to the observed ones in terms of their geometric characteristics, the state and the size of traffic flow. One is situated in the wider and the other in the narrower part of the town. The applied calculation models have been described. They have been verified with regard to the field measurements and the comment regarding the application of the described calculation methods has been given.
