Children in sport and physical activity : match or mismatch of needs and demands

The article deals with the complex relation between childrens’ needs and sport and exercise activity from the aspect of fulfilling those needs. Therefore, the emotional, motivational and personality characteristics of middle chilhood are described. Also, sport and exercise activity characteristics are analysed according to the competitive character of theirs, their motor component and according to the conditions of performing those activities. The comparison of the two sets of characteristics, of the middle childhood and sport and exercise activity, showed that: 1.competitive character of sport and exercise activities has the value of stress stimulus and can therefore hinder the emotional and motivational stability of children; 2. motor character of sport and exercise activities, with their features of complexity, harmony, difficulty, degree of risk, rhythm etc., can fulfill childrens’ needs for activity, novelty, harmony, challenge, competence and mastery, and therefore it can help in the development of emotional health; 3. conditions of performing such activities depend mostly on the behaviour and treatment of a coach or physical education teacher and therefore can have favourable or unfavourable influence on the development of children, depending on the style of coaching or teaching. It is suggested to decrease as much as possible the competitive character of sport and exercise activities, as well as to choose the of adequate style of coaching and teaching.
