Physiology and pathophysiology of perforin mediated cytotoxicity
Cytotoxic lymphocytes are effectors in the reactions of cell mediated cytotoxicity and they belong to cytotoxic T lymphocytes and natural killer cells. They are classified morphologically as large granular lymphocytes with numerous secretolytic granules in cytoplasm that contain perforin serine esterases (granzymes) and other apoptotic molecules. It is our postulate that cytotoxicity mediated by perforin is important component in the rejection of allografted tissues and organs and that perforin may be useful marker for the assessment of transplant survival.
