Seasonal dynamic of the picoplankton in the jabuka pit (Central Adriatic Sea)
Abundance and production of heterotrophic bacteria, abundance of cyanobacteria genus Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus were obtained in the period from December 2004 to September 2005. Cell counts were obtained by flow cytometer and bacterial production was estimated by the uptake of the radioactive thymidine. Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus were recorded during the year with mean values of 9.13 x 103 cells ml -1 and 7.37 x 103 cells ml-1 respectively at different concentration of TIN. The concentration of NO3-, NO2- , temperature, salinity and depth showed like important controlling factors for cyanobacteria distribution. Bacterial abundance average of 3.8 x 105 cells ml-1 showed little change during the period of research. During the warm part of the year the bacterial production was highest and LOW DNA bacteria dominate throughout the water column over HIGH DNA bacteria what may indicate that LOW DNA bacteria are the active part of the heterotrophic bacterial population.
