Food Contact Analysis of Recycled Paper and Board
Aim of the study was to evaluate the suitability of recycled paper and board for direct food contact applications. Three different types of liner boards commonly used as a top layer of pizza delivery box boards were chosen for the experiment. The liner boards used were made with varying amounts of recovered pulp. As a case study ‐ the chemical deinking flotation was performed on liner board sample having the highest amount of recycled matter in order to evaluate if the quantity of chemical contaminants decreases after deinking flotation procedure. Food contact analysis were done on the original paper samples, as well as on the filter pads and handsheets made before and after deinking flotation procedure. Food contact analysis consisted of migration testing of brightening agents, colorants, PCPs, formaldehydes, and metals. Microbiological tests were also done in order to determine possible transfer of antimicrobial constituents.
