The Development of Excursion Tourism in Order to Valorize Economical and Touristic Resources in Rural Part of Istria
The results of a survey conducted in 2007 in coastal Istria by the Institute for Agriculture and Tourism of Poreč confirm the trend of growing demand for rural tourism. Through better marketing support, a large number of interested tourists could be persuaded to visit and spend their vacations in rural Istria and in this way, excursion tourism would help to better valorise the region’ s cultural and natural capital. The cultural, historical and other heritages of Istria represent a vital resource in the future dynamic development of excursion tourism. For now, this is but ‘ idle’ capital that needs to be exploited through tourist consumption. The main hypothesis of this paper is to prove that through the promotional activities of the tourism offering in seaside and rural tourism, cultural and other services and facilities could complement this offering and could serve as a travel motivation to increase the interest of tourists to visit and spend their holidays in a rural environment. This should be the concern of all providers of the coastal catering and tourism offering, tourist boards, travel agencies, rural municipalities, as well as the makers of the development and tourism policies of Istria as a destination. The current excursion offering of rural Istria is inadequate and poorly designed, which is one of the reasons for the preference for excursions beyond this destination. The small number of excursions that are organised within the destination in its rural part are generally combined with visits to the coast. In the future development of this segment of the selective tourism offering, care should be taken to ensure sustainable development and to strike a balance between environmental protection and commercialisation, which is contrary to the interests of travel agencies and other excursion organisers.
