Comparative study of primary prognostic factors and recidives' number in breast cancer patients

Introduction: Primary prognostic factors for breast cancer are lymph node status, tumor size, hormonal receptors and tumor grade. Nowadays, new prognostic factors are Her-2/neu receptor status, epidermal growth factor receptor, DNA ploidy, S-phase, p53, angiogenesis, peritumoral lymphatic invasion, bone marrow micrometastasis and others. The aim of the study: To identify primary prognostic factors for reccurence five years after surgery in breast cancer patients treated at the Department of Oncology and Radiotherapy in Clinical Hospital Centre in Rijeka from 1997 to 2001. Patients and methods: 477 breast cancer patients were treated surgically at the Department of General Surgery and thereafter at the Department of Oncology and Radiotherapy between 1997 to 2001. Median follow up after surgery was 5 years. 8% of patients (38/477) recurred 5 years after surgery. Average tumor size was between 2, 1-5 cm (44, 24% of patients), while 43, 61 of patients had the tumor size between 5 mm-2 cm. Lymphovascular invasions was determined in 30 % of patients. Positive lymph nodes were determined in 48, 64% of patients (232/477). Estrogen receptors were positive in 33, 33% of patients while progesterone receptors were positive in 32.65% of patients. Conclusion: We found that eight percent of breast cancer patients developed recidives five years after surgery. Patients with larger tumors, vascular invasion, and positive progesterone receptors are at higher risk for recurrence.
