Spread of invasive spiny-cheek crayfsih (Orconectes limosus) in Croatia: filling knowledge gaps and identifying confinement measures
The invasive spinycheek crayfish (Orconectes limosus) is present in the Danube River and it spreads into the Drava River in Croatia, overpowering the indigenous Danube crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) and causing a general detrimental effect on the river ecosystem. The invasion has the potential to spread on a vast majority of water bodies in the Danube River catchment of Croatia. The aim of this research was to fill knowledge gaps in invasive crayfish biology and suggest set of measures required to limit their further spread. In October 2008, field research using baited LiNi traps was conducted in the Drava River and its adjacent Renovo Channel in order to assess the basic population characteristics of two species. The speed of upstream migration of invasive crayfish is estimated to be 1.5 km per year. Population density was assessed at 0.002 indigenous and 0.03 invasive crayfish in the Drava River and 0.001 indigenous and 0.13 invasive crayfish in the adjacent Renovo Channel per square meter. Invasive crayfish has much higher population densities than native one, prefers channels as a habitat and source-sink habitat theory is used for explanation of their spread. Attitude of local stakeholders toward actions aimed at stopping the invasion were mainly positive. Local anglers were identified as a crucial group due to their high numbers, presence in the field and knowledge. Activities required to stop the invasion will be coordinated through institutional framework of “ action plan” and based on activities such as monitoring, public participation and overfishing
