Measuring the Utility of Information Technology Application in Our Practice
The utility measuring of information technology (IT) is a complex issue. On one hand, it comprises of elements whose benefits can be interpreted in different ways, and on the other hand, the use of IT can be organized and realized differently, depending on the situation. Chosen and used metric form and methods or models for measuring IT benefits depend on the goals which are to be achieved. There are direct and easily measured effects of IT (quantity measures) and indirect measures (quality measures) which are hard to measure. Generally, benefits of IT use can be classified in four categories, those which: offer less effort and use of operative processes ; speed up management support ; give an advantage over competition ; and those which allow a good restructuring frame and business transformation. Modern trends in development of IT use benefits research show that, along with quantity factors, one should include quality and risk factors of IT use in measuring processes. Problem of measuring of IT use benefits was introduced to our companies with a questionnaire. Goal of such research was to determine whether our companies implement such measures, and if so, whether the methods of measuring are adequate. Results have shown that our companies for the most part do not implement measuring of IT use benefits in their business practices, and if they do, they use inadequate measuring methods.
