Just-world beliefs and adjustment in adulthood
Background: In line with prior work on the adaptiveness of the belief in a just world (BJW) in younger people, this study sought evidence for its function in sustaining mental health and psychological well-being during adulthood. Method: Self-report measures of the general and personal BJW, depression and life satisfaction were administered in two independent samples of Croatian adults (N1=400 ; N2=196), as a part of a larger research project on the BJW during adulthood. Findings: As expected, the two BJWs correlated positively with life satisfaction and negatively with depression in both samples. However, the strength of the associations was found to vary depending on the participants' gender and employment status. Discussion: The results provide support for the hypothesis that the belief in the justness of the world promotes mental health and psychological well-being and extend the notion of adjustment during adulthood to include just-world perspective.
