Natural features and sustainable development of Zlarin Island
Zlarin Island is a little Central Dalmatian island located in Šibenik archipelago. On carbonate base typical karst relief was developed, with all characteristics of karst processes. Geomorphological features were some of the most important factors of landscape development in the past. In morphological depressions and on glacis slopes sediments were deposited and agricultural suitable soils were developed. These soils were the base for agricultural development and welfare of the population. Because of its isolation and hard living conditions, in the last few decades Zlarin Island is facing constant depopulation and cessation of farming. Uncultivated land is being overgrown with Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.). It prevents soil erosion, but displaces autochthonous plant species and increases fire risk. Taking into account geological, geomorphological, pedological, climatic and phytocenological features of Zlarin Island authors proposed measures to stimulate revitalization of this typical Central Dalmatian island.
