Comparative Analysis of Methods and Models for the Assessment of the Benefits of Investing into Information Technology
Measuring the (positive) effects, i.e. benefits of investing into information technology (IT) is an important process, since such investments have reached high figures, and are still continually climbing. IT potentials are being used in various ways. Because of this situation, various models, methods and metrics delving into the correlation between the investments into IT (or, in further text: IT investments), and benefits that are reaped due to its use, have been researched for years. In this work, the author presents various trends and characteristics of the development of methodology for the assessment of IT investment benefits up to the present times. Based on the analysis of a methodology suggested by modern trends and chosen empirical models of widely recognized researchers (period ranging from the 90's until the present), the criteria for the choice of the adequate method/model for the assessment of the benefits of investing into IT, has been defined. The summarized overview and the comparative analysis of researched methods/models/measures, as well as the defined criteria, are all very useful data for researchers and managers alike. Furthermore, it looks for answers to a growing number of questions, such as: Does management perceive the importance of published research as a source of information about the measurements of IT values? How does one approach the practical assessment of the benefits of investing into IT and which methodology should be used? Does management develop the assessment system and supports its use?
