Social Pedagogues - from Knowledge to Faith in Change
This paper presents results of research program "Scientific foundations and development of social pedagogy in Croatia". The project is primarily focused on finding answers to questions about the identity of social pedagogy. It is also focused on establishing scientific criteria that are fulfilled by social pedagogy, as well as on finding a model to form theories which can be empirically examined by scientific knowledge and practical experience. Therefore, it is important to describe the professional identity of social pedagogues which is defined by the professional competences these experts possess. This paper shows how social pedagogues, who are employed in different jobs and engaged in different areas of work in Croatia, evaluate professional competences (n=117). Competences are divided into metacompetences, cognitive, functional, behaviour and value competences. It has been established that all the mentioned elements form a system of professional competences of social pedagogues and that specificities in assessing the importance of certain competences derive from the content and level of intervention in which the examinees are engaged.
