Multidisciplinary approach to exploration, characterization and protection of Pašino vrelo aquifer system - Croatia

“ Pašino vrelo” aquifer system is situated in the valley of Sunja stream, in central part of Croatia near state boundary with Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is composed of two aquifers: the carbonate aquifer which is the most important source of drinking water in the area, and overlaying Quaternary alluvial aquifer. As the result of favorable hydrogeological conditions, groundwater from carbonate aquifer discharges at three springs located in Sunja valley. Such circumstances prompted hydrogeological exploration aimed to finding out possibilities of groundwater abstraction from carbonate aquifer. First hydrogeological exploration dates back to 1970s which resulted in construction of two wells. However, the well capacities were not as good as expected, probably because of inappropriate drilling method. Better results were obtained in late 1980s when another well was constructed. Because of rising drinking water demands in the region, Croatian geological survey has recently performed further exploration of the aquifer system which is thoroughly described in the paper. It included detailed geophysical exploration which interpretation led to location of one structural borehole followed by construction of another abstraction well. Interpretation of the results of pumping test, groundwater hydrodynamics and geochemical analyses, which included stable isotopes determination, made sound foundation for adequate characterization of aquifer system and appropriate groundwater protection.
