Dental laser and Classical Dentistry
After the development of ruby laser in 1960, various types of lasers have been employed during dental tretment. Since the development of the laser by Maiman in 1960, laser has been applied in various fields of dentistry. The Er:YAG wavelength has been recognized as the optimal modality for hard tissue ablation. Since it has the highest absorption of all infrared lasers in dental tissue, it allows ablation of enamel, dentin and composite fillings. This laser causes little or no temperature rise in the irradiated tooth surface during cavity preparation or carbonization of microcracks seen in irradiated enamel and dentin when the laser is used used with water spray. Also, no difference in the dental pulp was observed after cavity preparation using the Er:YAG laser or high-speed drill.
