Farmers vs. Breeders selection: agronomic and molecular evaluation of a participatory maize breeding program response

During more than 20 years, a Portuguese maize landrace ‘ Pigarro’ was breed under a participatory approach (VASO project) using farmer (mass selection) and breeder selection (recurrent selection by S2 lines). We analysed the selection response comparing the initial population (C0-84) with two mass selection cycles (C9-93, C20-04) and three recurrent representative selection cycles (C1(S2)-89, C2(S2)-94, C3(S2)-98). For the molecular level comparisons, 30 individuals from each cycle were screened with 16 different SSR markers. At agronomic level, multilocation trails were conducted in Portugal (2-3 locations in four years) and USA (4 locations in one year), evaluating morphological traits such as ear length and fasciation level, and yield. Comparative analysis of selection methods is in progress.
