Comparison of SNMP Management Features Between “ Classical” Telecommunications Network and IP Based Network
SNMP protocol is widely used for management of IP based equipment. Becoming a standard, it was enrolled in management of “ classic” telecommunication network equipment (e.g. transmission equipment) also. Syntax of SNMP is standardized, and there is no difference between format of SNMP messages and Management Information Base if we compare IP and “ classic” telecommunications world. However, semantics and general MIB structure describing managed equipment is rather distinctive. This paper gives a brief overview of main general differences between IP and “ classic” telco philosophy. Understanding of such differences can be of great importance during customization of fault management data access in telecommunications network.
