Faults Diagnosis in Fuel Oil System of Marine Propulsion Diesel Engine
Considering the high amount of mechanical parts in diesel propulsion plant that are vulnerable to faults, the faults can appear relatively often and suddenly during operation, thus their detection and localization are of the utmost importance for the reliable operation of working diesel engine. Simulation and analysis of ship's propulsion system faults is done using the simulator of type Kongsberg Norcontrol PPS2000, that simulates behavior of ship's system very close to real conditions. The subject of this article is fault detection and analysis of component operation in fuel oil system of marine propulsion diesel engine MAN B&W5L90MC on Very Large Crude Carrier ship. The work of all important components in fuel oil system, such as fuel oil supply and booster pumps, fuel oil heaters and filters has been analyzed. Fault tree method in detection of faults based on time tracking of symptoms and events is used. Some of safety actions in diesel propulsion plant, described in form of fuzzy logic rules, based on the experience and knowledge of the experts are also presented.
