Implant retained full denture prosthetic restoration in edentulous mandible: case report

Full denture retention in an edentulous mandible is challenging and difficult task in prosthodontic restorations. However, in recent years the development of dental implantology has revolutionised the ways full dentures are planned and constructed. Through the use of retention and stabilisation attachments implants and dentures achieve a highly satisfactory combined restoration. We report of a 65 year old male patient who required multiple tooth root extractions in the mandible and replacement of old maxillary and mandibular full dentures. Immediate implantation in the extracted root sites followed extraction. Two NobelReplace™ Tapered implants (Nobel BioCare, Zurich, Switzerland), one 13mm long and 4.3mm wide and one 13mm long and 5.0 mm wide, were placed in the position 33 and 43. The site was sutured and a provisional denture was fabricated by adjusting the old denture. After a period of three months the implant site was reopened and gingiva formers we placed. Ball Abutment Titanium™ (Nobel BioCare, Zurich, Switzerland) was used as abutments for the fabrication of attachments. Impressions were made using the Impregum Penta Soft (3M ESPE, USA) polyether material. Full lower dentures were fabricated and implant attachments were inserted into the body of the denture. Six months follow up showed no significant changes in implant health. Bone resorption was within standard values.
