Symbolic Aspects of Space: A Study Case of Vukovar

This presentation analyses ways in which individulas from various ethnic group organize public reconstruction of post war space in Vukovar. Members of the Serbian ethnic group in the period between 1991-1998 have emphasised Serbian national heritage and elements of architecture related to Serbian orthodox religion. Since 1998 with the return of the exiled Croatian population and with the establishment of the Croatian constitutional law and order, the reconstruction of public space has emphasised Central European heritage of the city. Both approaches base their connection to the city of Vukovar with wider identity framework and its justification is found in buildings/objects with strong symbolic effects.
