Quality changes of Scots pine wood (Pinus sylvestris L.) due to biodegradation with brown rot fungus Gloeophillum trabeum (Pers.: Fr.)
SEM micrographs of characteristic details of anatomical structure of non-decayed and decayed pine sapwood, fungal hypha and mycelium are presented. Specimens of size 15×25×50 mm were prepared and decayed by brown rot fungus Gloeophillum trabeum for 120 days and afterwards SEM analysed. Highly degraded surface of decayed specimens that was directly exposed to fungal mycelium is visible, and deeper in the specimen degradation is lower. The penetration of initial hyphae through parenchyma cells of wood rays degrading membranes of crossfield pits is clearly visible in all decayed specimens. Hyphae penetrate through wooden rays either in-between S2 and S3 sub layers or in lumen of axial tracheides where they decay toruses in the first place. It is very interesting to mention that very developed mycelium was found in empty radial and axial resin canals.
