The influence of leaching on the dimensional stability of beech wood modified by citric acid

Beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.) was chemically modified by citric acid (CA) using different thermo-condensation regimes and catalysts. The dimensional stability of wood was significantly improved. Chemical bonds between citric acid and hydroxyl groups of wood were tested with the leaching of modified wood. Initially achieved improvement of dimensional stability decreased after the first leaching test only, and remained almost unchanged after further leaching tests. That practically proves crosslinking of citric acid with wood.
