Water-inFuel Emulsion as Primary Method to REduce NOx from Diesel Engine Exhaust Gas
Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emitted from diesel engines is listed as one of the causative substances wich cause the extensive environmental pollution such as the acid rain as well as the formation of harmful ground-level ozone and photochemical smog. Existing International Maritime Organization’ s (IMO) MARPOL 73/78 Annex VI agreement prescribes NOX emission limits for the international shipping industry. Manufacturers of marine diesel engines responded on those demands by improving of engine operations and by introducing of new technologies. Methods of reducing NOx in exhaust gases are: Pretreatment or conditioning of the fuel and/or the combustion air Engine tuning or operational mode Hardware design such as modifications and enhancements to the combustion chamber components, fuel system components, engine control system, etc Conditioning the exhaust gas after the combustion process This paper describes method to reduce nitrogen oxides from exhaust gas of the slow speed marine diesel propulsion engine B&W-5L90MC using Oil-in-Water emulsificationon . The efficiency of the Oil-in-Water emulsification system was tested on engine room full mission simulator „ Kongsberg ERS-L11 MAN B&W-5L90MC– VLCC Version MC90-IV” which is installed on Faculty of Maritime studies in Split. The results are illustrated by figures and graphs which shows approximately 20% NOx reduction in exhaust gas.
