Fluviokarst vs. karst: examples from the Island of Krk, Northern Adriatic, Croatia
Two different karst landscapes were detected situated in the southwester part of the island of Krk. These different ladscape indicate different role of fluvial processes in their morphogenesis. Karstic plateau in the western part of the island of Krk at 100-200 m altitude is an undulated landscape pocked with sinkholes of various sizes. Wide areas are covered by red soil (terra rossa) and covered mostly by dense vegetation. Only along the coastal part of karstic plateau dry fossil valleys are found. Somewhat different type of karstic landscape is found in the eastern part, where raised and indented relief with very sparse vegetation prevails. Two types of forms dominate in relief, both striking NW-SE . Coastal slopes here are relatively steep and the whole area is characterized by numerous dry valleys, deeply cut in carbonate rock mass, while typical karstic landforms (dolines) are rare.
