QUENCHING OF FLUORESCENCE IN WORLD OF WHITENESS

White materials like textile, paper, plastics, ceramics and many others are clearly preferred colour in many material fields and aesthetic application. White is used as a sign of cleanness symbolised many phenomena in starting phase in all human activities. When he discovered fluorescent compound Aesculine by water extraction from horse chestnut, P. Kraiss 1929 wrote „About the new white ...“. It was the new white indeed, never seen before such high whiteness degree. This fluorescent compound and later many others synthesised add a new dimension to the white textiles giving the importance and beauty of white objects as one of basic colour in all colour systems. It makes our world more beautiful with special feeling of neutrality, cleanness and chastity, new and unused. The present paper deals with cotton fabrics treated with FWA fluorescence in wide concentration range for a purpose of studying the quenching of fluorescence. This phenomenon undergoes the quenching equation and is important from psychological point of view. For such purpose white cotton fabrics for summer clothing were treated with stilbene derivate FWA in a wide range of concentration. The fabric whiteness, according to different theories – Whiteness Index according to Berger (WI-B), Hunter (WI-H), CIE (WI-CIE), Ganz-Griesser (WI-GG) and yellowness according to Yellow Index(YI) were calculated from spectral characteristics determined using remission spectrophotometer SF 600 PLUS CT (Datacolor). The relative intensity of fluorescence (Φrel) was calculated from measured fluorescence on adapted spectrophotometer Specol SV (Carl Zeiss).
