Measurements and Interpretation of the Surface Potential at Solid/Liquid Interfaces

The method of measuring the surface potential ψ0 at solid liquid interface by means of single crystal electrodes will be discussed. Surface potential will be interpreted in terms of the Surface Complexation Model. The effect of interfacial water ionisation on the relationship between electrokinetic and surface potential will be analyzed. Some recent results with silver chloride aqueous system will be presented. Surface potential measurements at different ionic strengths enabled evaluation of equilibrium parameters for silver chloride aqueous interface. Comparison of the isoelectric point of silver chloride at different pH suggested significant contribution of the interfacial aqueous layer to the electrokinetic behavior of silver chloride.
