UV Protection of Summer Clothing by Natural Zeolite Treated Cotton – The Infulence on Fabric Hand
UV protective clothing protect from harmful ultraviolet radiation (UV-R). It is well known that in addition to some beneficial effects of UV-R on skin, it may cause skin damage such as sunburn, allergies, skin aging and even skin cancer especially during summer time. The garment provides some UV protection but in most cases there are not enough Sun screening properties. This depends on a large number of factors such are the type of fiber, porosity, density, moisture content, light scattering, type and concentration of dye, fluorescent whitening agents (FWA) and UV protective agents. This paper reports a research work where activated natural zeolite was applied on cotton woven fabrics in different concentrations for achieving UV protective material. Tribomechanical activated natural zeolites are microporous hydrated crystals containing aluminosilicates. It is nontoxic substance with unique adsorption, cation exchange and catalytic properties. Therefore, it has multiple uses in industry, agriculture and medicine. Applied externally in powder form, it quickens the healing of wounds and surgical incisions. As proven bactericide and fungicide it gives off good antimicrobial protection on Gram positive bacteria. Applied on textile material it can absorb, but mostly scatter the UV-R, resulting in UV protection. However, the high concentrations of activated zeolite also effects on other fabric properties. The e influence of this application on fabric hand (subjective and objective evaluated), mechanical (breaking load, thickness), protective (UV protection) and aesthetic (whiteness, yellowing) fabric properties was investigated.
