Gender and speces differencs in the expression of renal OATs and OCTs

In the mammalian nephron, secretion and/or reabsorption of various endogenous and exogenous organic anions and cations is mediated with specific transporters (OATs and OCTs) localized in the apical or basolateral membrane of the epithelial cells. Our recent immunochemical studies showed that the expresion of various transporters exhibits sex differences in rats and mice, but not in pigs and humans. These data indicate that rodents may not be good models for pharmacological and toxicological studies relevant for humans.
