Dynamical effects in electron tunneling

The problem of the influence of dynamical screening on the electron tunneling is reviewed. Semi-classical and non-local theoretical approaches to that problem are analyzed emphasizing their limits. The application of these methods to STM and MIM systems is demonstrated, and some of the most important results are shown and discussed: (1) in the case of MIM, taking into account the non-locality of the process is very important and self-consistency of the solution is easily reached; (ii) in the case of STM, taking into account the curvature of the surfaces leads to the asymmetry in the barrier, tunneling current and conductivity, and to focusing of the tunneling current i.e. higher lateral resolution.
