Hydrogen embrittlement of linepipe steels
Studies were conducted regarding the effect of sulfur content in linepipe steel on HE susceptibility. The specimens of high sulfur linepipe (.021% S) were exposed to constant hydrogen flux through electrolyte charging under potentiostatic conditions. Hydrogen absorbed caused the significant degradation of mechanical properties, more intensive stepwise cracks and considerable increase of residual stresses in high sulfur steel. MnS inclusions and nontransformed Fe-C phases identified in high sulfur steel only, provide higher trap density and hence higher susceptibility to interfacial separation.
