Croatian Climate Atlas (1961-1990) : Applied geostatistical interpolation methods and quality of the maps
Digital mapping of climatological variables can be quite challenging in the presence of the complex orography like in Croatia. For the Croatian Climate Atlas approx. 25 maps are in the process of preparation that includes temperature, precipitation, sunshine duration, cloudiness, relative humidity and some other derived measures for describing the climate conditions. Almost two independent data sets with distinct statistical properties have been recognised for some variables: one for the continental part of the country and the other for the maritime one. Due to this, for some climatological elements the distribution of the data has been bimodal ; not very favourable characteristic for the geostatistical interpolation methods. Choosing the right predictors for the multiple regressions and the model for the kriging of the residuals has been crucial for the reproducing of this kind of data properties. High and relatively narrow Dinaric ridge that separates the two regions, where the data are not very numerous, presents a difficult task for modelling, proven also by the calculated prediction error variances. Different approaches have been tested in order to produce as precise maps as possible. Different statistical measures have been presented that gives the user the insight into the maps quality.
