New formaldehyde adhesive systems for particleboards modified with liquefied wood

Adhesives for wood-based panels are absolutely nonwooden components in wood composite production. Raw materials for these formaldehyde base adhesives come from non-renewable oil and natural gas. Although, in this moment, there is no problems with supplying with those raw materials, development of these adhesives from renewable natural sources will ensure long term success in wood composite industry. It will also reduce potential negative influence of oil prices, ultimately restricted oil and natural gas delivering. Connected to above, many researches are focussed on wood liquefaction and using liquefied wood as adhesives, apropos to gluing solid particles with liquid wood. With the application of natural adhesives, the problem with formaldehyde emission, present in composites produced with application of synthetic formaldehyde adhesives, will be eliminated. That would cause enhancement of ecological purity of wood-based panels, and further expansion of integral wood components utilization. Therefore, the subject of this research was application of liquefied wood-formaldehyde (LWF) resin in combination with urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins in experimental particleboards production, as the most important representative of all boards from fragmented wood. As stated above, the assignment of this research was improvement of physical-mechanical and chemical properties, with respect to reduction of free formaldehyde emission.
