Ultrasound bone measurement in older population with the metabolic syndrome
Background and Aims: Metabolic syndrome and osteoporosis are recognized as major public health problems in many countries. This study investigated the association between bone density and components of the metabolic syndrome in elderly population. Methods: The study included population sample of 181 men and women. The mean age was 77.9+4.5 years. Anthropometry, blood pressure, serum levels of lipoproteins (HDL and LDL), triglycerides and glucose were determinate and ultrasound bone densitometry was performed to all subjects. Information on lifestyle habits, including physical activity and smoking, were obtained with the questionnaire. Results: Metabolic syndrome defined by the criteria of the International Diabetes Federation was found in 59% of men and in 65% of women. Bone mineral density (BMD) was significantly correlated with serum glucose in men (r=-0.28 ; p=0.015) and with body mass index (BMI) in women (r=0.38 ; p<0.001). BMD was significantly lower in men with metabolic syndrome (p<0.001) and significantly higher in women with metabolic syndrome (p=0.05) comparing to the controls. When BMD was adjusted for BMI in women and for serum glucose in men, it was no longer significantly different from the control group. Other components like cholesterol, blood pressure, smoking, alcohol and physical activity were not significantly associated with BMD. Conclusions: We conclude that the association between metabolic syndrome and bone density could be explained with increased BMI in women and high serum glucose in men.
