Guest Editorial to the Special Issue on the 4th Dubrovnik Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment

This special issue of the Management of Environmental Quality consists of seven selected papers which were presented during the 4th Dubrovnik Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment, held in Dubrovnik, from 2-7 June 2007 and co-organised by the University of Zagreb and Instituto Superior Téchnico from Lisbon. The conference has kept devoted to its very first goals – a promotion of new strategy in the development of energy, water and environment systems as a life supporting systems. This new strategy is based on sustainability approach which is particularly suitable for such complex and important systems. As the evidence for human induced changes in environment becomes clearer, sustainability concept increasingly gains importance. It might be that this is the only way to decrease the humanity's ecological resource demands and to preserve the environment for the future generations. It was the honour but also the highly demanding task for editors of this special issue, to select seven papers which will make the best presentation of the conference itself. Sustainable utilisation of energy, climate change, optimised transport, water management and metal recycling are thematic coverage of this issue. We would like to thank Prof. Walter Leal Filho, the editor of the Management of Environmental Quality: An International Journal, for his invaluable assistance in preparing this special issue. We are also grateful to reviewers and authors for their efforts that helped making this issue relevant reference material.
